A\u00f1os m\u00e1s tarde, adapt\u00e9 mi t\u00e9cnica al lienzo y cambi\u00e9 el tema de mis pinturas, incursionando en paisajes.<br \/> Despu\u00e9s de mi primera exposici\u00f3n individual de paisajes de las ruinas de Epecu\u00e9n, una ciudad que desapareci\u00f3 despu\u00e9s de una gran inundaci\u00f3n, comenc\u00e9 a buscar un nuevo tema para pintar.<br \/> Una noche, mientras tomaba mi bebida habitual de whisky, comenc\u00e9 a buscar im\u00e1genes de otros paisajes que me inspiraron. Encontr\u00e9 una fotograf\u00eda de una puesta de sol en las monta\u00f1as que reflejaba perfectamente mis sentimientos desde el escoc\u00e9s, y decid\u00ed pintarla.<br \/> A partir de ese momento, pintar el tema del whisky se convirti\u00f3 en una pasi\u00f3n. Comenc\u00e9 a ejercer sensibilidad y expandir el rango de percepci\u00f3n en cada whisky que prob\u00e9, observando m\u00e1s de cerca su color, aromas, sabores, acabado y la atm\u00f3sfera o el paisaje mental que cada uno evocaba en m\u00ed.<br \/> El resultado fue la serie &#8216;Free Spirit&#8217;, en la que cada pintura se refiere a un whisky particular en un paisaje que, seg\u00fan mi subjetividad, es un reflejo de su car\u00e1cter, su historia, su terru\u00f1o y su esp\u00edritu.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 el whisky es un tema tan poderoso?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Veo el whisky mismo como una obra de arte; Cada expresi\u00f3n es \u00fanica a su manera. Primero busco el impacto que el whisky tiene en mis sentidos, analizando todas las sensaciones que crea y buscando la imagen mental correcta que lo represente con precisi\u00f3n (aunque esa imagen a menudo me encuentra primero).<br \/> Una vez que tengo la imagen, investigo las caracter\u00edsticas de ese whisky, su proceso de producci\u00f3n, la destiler\u00eda, su historia y su ubicaci\u00f3n geogr\u00e1fica. Luego busco una fotograf\u00eda que se acerque a la imagen mental que surgi\u00f3 en mi mente cuando la prob\u00e9 por primera vez, preferiblemente desde un lugar en el \u00e1rea de donde proviene el whisky. Cada uno tiene su propia historia \u00fanica, y cada uno ha representado un desaf\u00edo diferente, por lo que todos son especiales para m\u00ed.<br \/> Hay algunos que guardo por su significado; entre ellos est\u00e1 el que pint\u00e9 en honor a la botella de Chivas Regal 12 que mi padre compr\u00f3 el a\u00f1o en que nac\u00ed y que abrimos el a\u00f1o pasado el D\u00eda del Padre. Ese whisky y esa pintura siempre me llevar\u00e1n de vuelta a un hermoso momento familiar.<br \/> Otra pintura que guardo es \u00abOrgullo\u00bb en honor a The Dalmore 12. La pintura muestra la cara de un ciervo en primer plano, envuelto en una atm\u00f3sfera invernal. Es una pintura casi monocrom\u00e1tica, algo raro para m\u00ed ya que usualmente uso colores muy fuertes. Esta pintura representa la nobleza del esp\u00edritu, quien, a\u00fan consciente de su fragilidad, enfrenta la vida con firmeza, mirando al frente y siendo el protagonista de su propia historia.<br \/> Tambi\u00e9n mantengo \u00abEpic Spirit\u00bb, un homenaje a Sassenach Spirits, el whisky lanzado este a\u00f1o por el actor Outlander Sam Heughan. A diferencia del resto de la serie, no tuve la suerte de probar esa mezcla. Whisky &amp; Co.\u2019s John Robertson and whisky artist Gisela Garcia Gleria, we spoke (virtually) with the painter to find out more about her inspiration for putting whisky on canvas and how she captures the subtle essences of the dram.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A blend of craftsmanship<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In our last outing (so to speak in these stationary times), we ventured between the worlds of fine art and Scotch whisky to explore parallels behind the two crafts, and how one artist, Gisela Garcia Gleria, has been blending the two.<br \/> With much more whisky inspired artwork to come from the talented Argentinian, we spoke with Gisela to find out how she became a painter, why she believes whisky makes such a powerful subject, and how she translates the aromas, flavours and sensory experiences of drinking whisky from glass to canvas.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>How did you get into art and painting the subject of whisky?<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>I started painting when I attended the scenographic production course at Teatro Col\u00f3n in Buenos Aires. It was here that I first learned how to create large scale artworks. Years later I adapted my technique to canvas and changed the subject of my paintings, venturing into landscapes.<br \/> After my first solo exhibition landscapes of the ruins of Epecu\u00e9n, a city that disappeared after a great flood I started looking for a new subject to paint.<br \/> One night while I was drinking my habitual dram of whisky I began to look for images of other landscapes that inspired me. I found one photograph of a sunset in the mountains that perfectly mirrored my feelings from the Scotch, and I decided to paint it.<br \/> From that moment, painting the subject of whisky became a passion. I began to exercise sensitivity and expand the range of perception in each whisky that I tasted, observing more closely its colour, aromas, flavours, finish and the atmosphere or mental landscape that each one evoked in me.<br \/> The result was the \u2018Free Spirit\u2019 series, in which each painting refers to a particular whisky in a landscape that, according to my subjectivity, is a reflection of its character, its history, its terroir and its spirit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Why does whisky make such a powerful subject?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I see whisky itself as a work of art; each expression is unique in its own way. They are all the result of many years of work, where every person involved in the process must play their part with total commitment and skill. It is a creation that carries centuries of history behind it, has accompanied humankind across all circumstances, and has evolved with us.<br \/> Like paintings, whisky can reflect moods; it communicates, unites, accompanies, transports and generates unique sensations for the drinker. It is the legacy of those who were part of the creative process at one point in time, expressing their place of origin and their spirit in each drop, just as much as my spirit lives in each brushstroke of colour.<\/p>\n<p>How to do translate your inspiration from a whisky onto the canvas?<br \/> Each canvas is the result of a process that begins by tasting a whisky. First I look for the impact the whisky has on my senses, analysing all of the sensations that it creates and looking for the right mental image that accurately represents it (although that image often finds me first).<br \/> Once I have the image, I investigate the characteristics of that whisky, its production process, the distillery, its history and its geographical location. Then I look for a photograph that comes close to the mental image that arose in my mind when I first tasted it, preferably from a place in the area where the whisky comes from. Finally, I start painting, generally adding some personal detail to the scene.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>What has been your most memorable painting?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>It is very difficult to choose one particular painting. Each one has its own unique history, and each has represented a different challenge, so they\u2019re all is special to me.<br \/> There are some that I keep for their meaning; among them is the one I painted in honour of the bottle of Chivas Regal 12 that my father bought the year I was born and that we opened last year on Father&#8217;s Day. It was a special celebration. That whisky and that painting will always take me back to a beautiful family moment.<br \/> Another painting that I keep is \u2018Pride\u2019 in honour of The Dalmore 12. The painting shows the face of a deer in the foreground, wrapped in a winter atmosphere. It is an almost monochrome painting, something rare for me since I usually use very strong colours. This painting represents the nobility of the spirit, who, still aware of its fragility, faces life firmly, looking straight ahead and being the protagonist of its own history.<br \/> I also keep \u2018Epic Spirit\u2019, a tribute to Sassenach Spirits, the whisky released this year by Outlander actor Sam Heughan. Unlike the rest of the series, I was not lucky enough to try that blend. But the painting pays tribute to dreams fulfilled, to perseverance, to the will power of those who believe in themselves.<br \/> As a whisky lover, seeing a young artist manage to create his own whisky and being able to turn a project into reality with such care is something I admire and inspires me to continue creating.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>What do you hope to achieve in the future with your whisky paintings?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>I hope that my art helps to bring more people closer to the fascinating world of whisky, and that those who already enjoy this wonderful spirit find a new way to approach the experience of drinking it.<br \/> As soon as COVID 19 isolation is over, the Whisky &amp; Art experience will take place at the Whisky Museum in Buenos Aires. This museum houses the second largest private collection in the world, after Edinburgh, and its owner Miguel \u00c1ngel Reigosa is a benchmark in Argentina&#8217;s whisky world.<br \/> There I will display my paintings in tribute to the expressions of Tomatin that are going to be tasted at the event, and to the distillery itself. This project was postponed by the pandemic but I am looking forward to it happening soon.<br \/> In the future I would like my art to reach some Scottish distilleries, since I also paint them, an interesting subject that was born from an exchange of ideas between John and I and that has become a new series in itself. And, of course, it would be great to have the opportunity to paint right there at the distilleries; I think it could be a truly fascinating experience!<br \/> I want to thank you for the interest you show in my art and give special mention to the importance of sharing the experiences and the vision that each one has surrounding the world of whisky. Y sobre c\u00f3mo podr\u00edamos darle vida al whisky usando sus talentos en el lienzo y mis \u00abtalentos\u00bb para, bueno, pensar mucho sobre el tema.<br \/> En este punto, perm\u00edtanme decir lo obvio: las pinturas de Gisela (todav\u00eda) no tienen el mismo perfil que las de Da Vinci. Pero, querido lector, ya sabemos que la belleza est\u00e1 en el ojo del espectador, y este espectador en particular (yo) vio un mundo de encanto en la idea de explorar el arte del whisky y el arte de la pintura.<br \/> As\u00ed evolucion\u00f3 nuestra conexi\u00f3n ferviente y transatl\u00e1ntica.<br \/> A pesar de que apenas pod\u00edamos salir de nuestras puertas delanteras, est\u00e1bamos dando vueltas y cruzando los oc\u00e9anos mezclando dos sujetos aparentemente separados y dos extra\u00f1os completos, en un Corryvreckan de pintura, whisky, inspiraci\u00f3n y aislamiento frustrado.<br \/> Avancemos r\u00e1pidamente hasta mediados de mayo (todav\u00eda estamos encerrados &#8230;) y Gisela ha producido ocho expresiones gloriosas de obras de arte de whisky, cada una representando una destiler\u00eda de whisky diferente de todas las regiones de Escocia.<br \/> Pintado con acr\u00edlico sobre lienzo, Gisela teje los tonos que evocan el entorno de cada destiler\u00eda, las sutilezas de sus productos y las emociones que experimenta cuando bebe los whiskies a los que dan vida.<br \/> Mirando a cada uno por turnos, casi puedes inhalar los aromas de la cebada malteada, escuchar la nueva marca corriendo de los alambiques y saborear la sensaci\u00f3n de bocadillo perfectamente madurado tallado directamente del barril en un esti\u00e9rcol h\u00famedo y fresco.<br \/> Hasta la fecha, Gisela ha capturado las esencias de Strathisla en la nieve, Tomatin en el hielo, Dalwhinnie ba\u00f1ado por la luz de la luna, Bruichladdich bajo un cielo nublado, Ardbeg golpeado por las olas, Lagg rodeado de flores, Arran en una tormenta y mi favorito hasta ahora. This is the story of how a global pandemic led to one such unlikely, but truly enriching, blend of talents.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Art-imitates-whisky-imitates-art<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After many years of painstaking analysis and delicate investigation, experts from the world of fine art estimate that the Mona Lisa, Leonardo da Vinci s most celebrated masterpiece, contains more than 30 individual layers of considerately applied paint and glaze.<br \/> The result of this technique, whilst not obvious to the naked eye, was masterfully pursued by da Vinci in an effort to achieve a so called \u2018dream like quality\u2019 to his work. It was, we are told, the artist\u2019s own relentless \u2018standards of subtlety\u2019 that set his craft apart from centuries of other artwork, paintings and rivals.<br \/> Multiple layers. Dream like qualities. Standards of subtlety. Speaking in these terms, it is not difficult for any whisky drinker art enthusiast or not to begin drawing lines between da Vinci\u2019s domain and the world of Scotch.<br \/> Of Scotch whisky: ours is also a masterful craft, one that spans centuries in terms of its evolution, complexity and pursuit of quality. Now and again a genuine masterpiece is also uncovered.<br \/> Our master blender is the artist; our copper still and oak cask act as brush and paint; our new make the ready canvas; and our beholder, within whom beauty lies, is the discerning drinker.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Whisky on canvas<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to Scotch whisky I know a good degree. I know considerably less about art. But I\u2019ve always been aware of some connection, a presence between the two crafts of whisky making and painting. To draw out some of the parallels: natural talent, honed technique, resolute patience, and minutiae of detail that the artist or craftsperson must invest in creating something so complex yet innately consumable, a result worthy of more than just a passing glance of the eye or wash across the palate.<br \/> For me these two worlds collided, meaningfully at least, towards the beginning of what will forever be known as \u2018lockdown\u2019. Amidst the all consuming confusion and turmoil of those early days, in what would turn out to be a prolonged conversation of relative calm I was contacted by an artist based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, with something of a penchant for Scotch.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Corryvreckan of paint and whisky<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The artist, Gisela Garcia Gleria, took note of my occasional commentary on the subject and suggested we work together to extract aspects or nuances of the world of whisky which could serve as inspiration for her future artwork.<br \/> The wider world, but the whisky industry in particular, has seen a raft of inspiration, collaboration and opportunity born out of enforced lockdown and social isolation.<br \/> With that in mind, and keen to put any extra time at home to good use, Gisela and I began our conversation. It was a conversation about whisky. And about art. And about how we could bring whisky to life using her talents on canvas and my \u2018talents\u2019 for, well, thinking a lot about the subject.<br \/> At this point, let me state the obvious: Gisela\u2019s paintings don\u2019t (yet) command the same profile as da Vinci\u2019s. But, dear reader, we already know that beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, and this particular beholder (me) saw a world of enchantment in the idea of exploring the art of whisky and the art of painting.<br \/> So evolved our fervent, Transatlantic connection.<br \/> Even though we could barely step out of our front doors, here we were toing and froing across oceans blending two seemingly separate subjects, and two complete strangers, in a Corryvreckan of paint, whisky, inspiration and frustrated isolation.<br \/> Fast forward to mid May (we\u2019re still in lockdown\u2026) and Gisela has produced eight glorious expressions of whisky artwork, each one depicting a different whisky distillery from across the regions of Scotland.<br \/> Painted using acrylic on canvas, Gisela knits together tones that evoke each distillery\u2019s surrounding environment, the subtleties of its produce and the emotions she experiences when drinking the whiskies to which they give life.<br \/> Looking at each one in turn, you can almost inhale the aromas of malted barley, hear the new make running from the stills, and savour the mouthfeel of a perfectly matured dram hewn straight from the cask in a cool, damp dunnage.<br \/> To date, Gisela has captured the essences of Strathisla in the snow, Tomatin on ice, Dalwhinnie bathed in moonlight, Bruichladdich under cloudy skies, Ardbeg battered by waves, Lagg surrounded by flowers, Arran in a storm, and my favourite so far the stunning view from Raasay\u2019s stillroom across to the mountains of Skye.<br \/> With the \u2018Distillery Series\u2019 now in full flow, expect to enjoy a host of further expressions of this kind, as well as new reflections of the whisky world on canvas in the not too distant future.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A happy \u2018homecoming\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a happy case of \u2018homecoming\u2019, the owners of Raasay Distillery were so taken by their own expression that the original painting is, as we speak, making its way to Scotland to hang on the distillery walls.
